SUMMARY:ZUPPA Featuring Bevin Victoria
DESCRIPTION:It’s the return of Zuppa. \nDave Fleschner – Keys \nA.G. Donnaloia – Guitar \nAnthony Jones – Drums \nFeaturing Bevin Victoria on vocals and percussion. \nHere’s the story as Dave sees it: \n“I was playing a lot of organ trio music in the early 2000’s.  A.G. came up to me at a gig and asked if I was interested in starting a trio with him and Anthony Jones.  What ensued was several years of some of the most creative\, funky music I’ve been involved in.  We all went on to play with other groups – me with Curtis Salgado\, A.G. with Liv Warfield\, and Anthony with Pink Martini.  But now we’re back together\, and with our new collective experiences\, I’m excited to play music with these amazing people.  I met Bevin at a show a couple months ago\, and thought her cross-cultural approach to music and art to be a perfect complement to this group” \nBevin Victoria has worked as a guest artist with Sepiatonic\, Mike Van Liew and Underscore Orchestra and has been a featured vocalist on the Sepiatonic EP Step Up and Moh Alilech’s release Shame On You.  As a multi-talented artist – vocalist\, dancer\, actress\, percussionist – she brings a special kind of energy to the stage. \nIn 2017 she made her return to musical theatre in the Fox & Beggar production of Angamazad: A Tale of Arabian Nights and appeared as a soloist and an ensemble performer in the Modern Prometheans production\, Roles I’ll Never Play. In 2018 she appeared in I Hate Love Songs and It’s Good To Be Bad\, both also produced by Modern Prometheans. \nA.G. Donnaloia is a local performing\, touring and recording musician\, composer\, and guitar teacher for over 20 yrs. He plays and teaches a wide range of music styles including Jazz\, Latin American\, Soul\, R&B\, Rock and Hip Hop. He’s played with Liv Warfield and Freddy Trujillo\, among many others. \nOne of the founding members of N Touch\, drummer Anthony Jones has toured the world and performed at Carnegie Hall. He studied architecture and music at Portland State with pianist Darrell Grant and performed with the flamenco group Al-Andalus. He joined Pink Martiniin 2011\, and he recently returned to Portland to be home more with his wife Portia and their daughter.  And we’re so excited to have him back playing more locally. \nDoors at 6:00 P.M. \n1 Ticket – Two sets\, starting at 6:30 and 8:00: \nTickets at: \nhttps://www.tickettomato.com/event/9334 \n$15 if you buy before April 3. \n$20 at the door. \nUnderage seating available\, please indicated when purchasing tickets. \nHoku has delicious food and a full bar.

Reggie embraced education and followed in his parents footsteps to become an arts education advocate\, teacher\, and world-renowned saxophonist. \nReggie was inspired to study saxophone at age 10\, after seeing Ray Charles play alto sax at Lincoln Beach Amusement Park\, where Fats Domino also performed during Reggie’s childhood. Years later\, Reggie would share the stage with both musical giants\, and spend 22 years as a member of Fats Domino’s band\, before moving to Portland\, Oregon in 2004. \nHighlights of Reggie’s time in Portland include: \n\nServing as one of the teachers who prepared The American Music Program high school students for their 2015 1st place win at Lincoln Center’s prestigious Essentially Ellington competition that featured 88 high school jazz bands from across the US.\nPerforming for\, and helping to coordinate three Hurricane Katrina relief benefits:\n\nPortland\, Oregon – Blues for Katrina\, organized by the Oregon Food Bank raised $125\,000.\nSeattle\, Washington – a successful tri-state effort\, coordinated with the Tipitina’s Foundation\, that culminated in the first Instruments A-Comin’ fundraiser held outside of New Orleans to raise money and collect musical instruments for Louisiana school children impacted by Hurricane Katrina.\nCorvallis\, Oregon – Rockin’ The Cradle of Jazz\, held at The University of Oregon in conjunction with The United Way.\n\n\nServing on Portland’s Regional Arts & Culture Council Music Panel for Project Grants. RACC Grants Program Officer Lorin Schmit Dunlop recalls\, “[Reggie] was really pleased to be asked to serve the Arts Council and the arts community this way… and he was a delight! So knowledgeable and a real gentleman…a real asset on the panel.”\nParticipating by invitation as a founding member of the award-winning Northwest Ray Charles Tribute Band and performing with the Oregon Symphony.\nWinning four consecutive Muddy Awards earning him a place in the Cascade Blues Association Hall of Fame.\nPlaying the title character in Sherman\, Grammy award winning composer Thara Memory’s historical opera about Portland Jumptown-era saxophonist\, Sherman Thomas.\nMaintaining weekly\, long-standing gigs at some of Portland’s most beloved eateries: Tapalaya (8 years)\, Eats – An Oyster Bar (8 years)\, and Cannon’s during the summer months (11 years).\n\nSelect highlights of Reggie’s time in New Orleans include: \n\nStudied Music Education at Xavier University in New Orleans and Southern University in Baton Rouge\, La.\n10 years (1973-1983) as a paid employee of The New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival working as the Jazz Tent stage manager\, emcee and booking agent.\nWhen Danny Barker passed away\, Reggie was chosen by Greg Stanford and Shannon Powell to be one of the core band members to play his jazz funeral. A tremendous honor.\nPerformed with\, and offered the baritone sax chair in Dr. John’s band.\nPerformed with Rock & Roll Hall of Fame inductee Dave Bartholomew.\nCo-leader of The Charmaine Neville Band.\nPerformed regularly with Grammy award winning soul singer Irma Thomas.\nAppears on three Peter Gabriel albums.\nRecorded with Buffy St. Marie\, The Neville Brothers\, Indigo Girls\, Joan Osborne\, Bruce Hornsby\, and Mary Flower to name a few.\nPerformed with Bo Diddly\, Chuck Berry\, Professor Longhair\, Maria Muldaur\, Jerry Lee Lewis\, Spider John Koerner\, Rolling Stones guitarist Ronnie Wood\, Fats Domino and many more.\nOriginal member of The Survivors\, formed in 1982 with composer Ramsey McLean on acoustic bass\, fellow saxophonist Charles Neville\, keyboardist Sam Henry\, drummer Zigaboo Modeliste\, and vocalist Charmaine Neville. Other players with The Survivors included guitar virtuoso Steve Masakowski\, drummer Ricky Sebastian\, Bobby McFerrin\, and a teen-aged Harry Connick Jr. on one of his very first road gigs.\n\nReggie’s devotion to his craft\, and to sharing his deep knowledge of Louisiana’s history\, musicians\, and musical genres\, stems from a time-honored New Orleans tradition of arts education. Nurtured by his teachers—musical giants like Edward “Kidd” Jordan\, Johnny Fernandez\, Danny Barker\, and Alvin Batiste—the latter of whom learned at the knee of legendary musician Sidney Bechet\, referred to by Duke Ellington as “the very epitome of jazz\,” Reggie has now picked up the mantle to pass that knowledge on to future generations of musicians. \nWhen funk first developed\, exploding onto the scene\, Reggie was there—not as an observer\, but as a 13 year-old musician playing his first professional gigs with legendary keyboardist David Batiste Sr. and The Gladiators\, widely accepted as one of the preeminent and pioneering bands of funk. \nReggie knows the music. It is in his blood. He can trace the many\, varied styles and influences of southeast Louisiana music all the way back to pre-colonial Africa. It is this knowledge\, coupled with the strong arts education tradition of his hometown that gave rise to Reggie’s newest project\, Anonymous Legends: A History of New Orleans Music—the culmination of Reggie’s life’s work. \n \nTickets to the whole Series: \nhttps://www.tickettomato.com/event_group/547/dave-fleschner

SUMMARY:The Dave Fleschner Trio Feat Ben Rice
DESCRIPTION:TICKETS! \nDoors at 6:00 P.M. \n1 Ticket – Two sets\, starting at 6:30 and 8:00 \n$15 if you buy before April 24. \n$20 at the door. \nUnderage seating available\, please indicated when purchasing tickets. \nHoku has delicious food and a full bar. \nDave Fleschner on keys\, Dan Gildea on Guitar and Charlie Doggett on drums – have been making music together for decades. This trio begins the evening with  a range of original tunes from Dave’s catalogue\, as well as a variety of blues\, funk soul and jazz classics. \nThey will be joined by their special guest: Ben Rice. \nBen Rice might be described as quiet and unassuming – until he picks up a guitar. That stealthy quality has earned him the moniker “blues ninja\,” evidenced in his vocal chops and songcraft as well as his guitar playing. While Ben started in traditional blues\, over the years he’s built upon that foundation with soul\, R&B\, folk and country to fashion a welcoming front porch where everybody wants to hang out into the wee hours. Since his large-stage debut at the International Blues Challenge in 2014\, Ben has made the leap from Northwest act to national and international touring artist\, featuring at festivals and stages far and wide. \nBen’s early influences were vinyl records – his dad’s Steely Dan\, Bob Marley\, and Marshall Tucker and his mom’s Al Green\, Barry White\, and George Benson. Once his dad bought him a guitar at age seven\, Ben was hooked. Soon all his allowance money was going toward exploratory thrift store finds: blues compilations featuring Mississippi John Hurt\, Bukka White\, Mississippi Fred McDowell\, and cassette tapes of more contemporary artists like Stevie Ray Vaughan and Robert Cray\, all played until they wore out. \nThat broad range of influences combined to yield a guitar style that’s been described as “fearless\,” “inventive\,” and “powerful.” Whether he’s sliding up and down on a steel resonator or reeling off stinging leads on his custom-crafted electric\, Ben’s intensity and inventiveness never fail to turn heads. Audiences also respond to his heartfelt songwriting that carries a classic\, strongly relatable vibe. “My goal is to reach people in a way that they need to be reached\,“ Ben says\, “to say things they may not get to say or hear things they may not normally get to hear.” \nAlthough Ben’s first passion was guitar\, he diligently hones his singing to best support his original tunes. In performance he strives to be mindful of the meaning behind his lyrics\, treating every song like a story and evoking the mood of what the story’s main character is going through. “I try to write songs that hold weight and meaning\, but my songs mean whatever they need to for whoever hears them\,” Ben says. “I want people to enjoy my music on their own terms.” \nTICKETS! \nLink to the whole series!
