SUMMARY:The Bundy Band
DESCRIPTION:The BundyBand plays music inspired by New Orleans and the Pacific Northwest. It features many musicians who have been playing together in various formations for nearly 4 decades. You might catch us on a night up on the hill playing the jazz. Or a guest might come by and steer us down a path of John Prine songs. Any style of music is fair game: New Orleans trad jazz\, second line brass band tunes\, funk\, standards\, original songs about Humanzees and Han Solo\, or even covers from artists like Charles Wright\, The Band\, or Phish. Sometimes Fleschner lights an infinite cosmic fire with his organ. Sometimes Savage tears the fabric of space time with his flute. Sometimes Bundy even plugs his clarinet into a bunch of pedals and breaks your mind. If we get it right\, the music goes somewhere really special\, and we all go along for the ride.

DESCRIPTION:TICKETS!\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDoors at 6:00 P.M. \n1 Ticket – Two sets\, starting at 6:30 and 8:00 \n$15 if you buy before May 29. \n$20 at the door. \nUnderage seating available\, please indicated when purchasing tickets. \nHoku has delicious food and a full bar. \n\n–Christone “Kingfish” Ingram\nArtist and Mentor\n\n“In the early years working with United By Music mentors like Bobby Rush and Kenny Neal really built my confidence on stage. Now I can build similar confidence in the current program artists by mentoring them and maximizing every opportunity to showcase their talent” \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n–Bruce Iglauer\nPresident and Founder\, Alligator Records\n\n“What I hear from the United By Music America musicians comes from such an honest place. It was just thrilling to me to hear musicians who brought so much of themselves and put themselves into the songs in this way. It was also very exciting to see experienced blues musicians accompanying and working with them to bring the best out of everybody.” \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n–Tommy Castro (Tommy Castro & The Painkillers)\nMentor\n\n“Music is what gave my life meaning\, purpose and direction\, and I recognize that feeling in the United By Music artists. I stay involved every chance I get\, from rehearsing to performing on their sets to inviting the band to open for us on stage. I invite my musician friends to do the same — give back a little bit and become a part of this and see how music really can solve so many problems.” \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n–John Boutté\nMentor\n\n“It is inspirational to be included\, invited\, to be a mentor in this program. Thank you so much United By Music Band for recording Treme…you made it beautiful\, beautiful.” \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n“Imagine a world where no prejudice exists regardless of race\, creed\, color\, gender or developmental challenge. This is what we cultivate through inclusion\,” says Barbara Hammerman\, who\, along with her daughter Amanda Gresham\, founded the award-winning organization\, United By Music America (UBMA) in 2012. Using the far-reaching power of performing music as a band\, the mission-driven group works with individuals from many backgrounds and challenges to achieve this vision. “We are always on a talent search\,” Hammerman adds. “We’ve just touched the tip of the iceberg in finding the talent that we know is ready to soar through United By Music.” \nHammerman\, president of Hammerman Philanthropic Partners\, and Gresham\, CEO of Delta Music Experience\, have been nationally recognized for their work with United By Music America. The Blues Foundation honored Hammerman with the Keeping The Blues Alive award\, saying\, “Barbara is an example to emulate.” Gresham received Back What You Believe\, Best Northwest Event and six Anthem Awards for her purpose and mission-driven work.  Barbara and Amanda inspire others to act through their leadership in the life-changing efforts of United By Music America. Others who have received the Industry Recognition Anthem Award – brought to you by the Webby Awards – include Lady Gaga\, Michelle Obama\, Kamala Harris and Taylor Swift. \nPerforming coast-to-coast and internationally\, United By Music America – a 501(c)(3) organization – is a unified\, performance-based program and band for neuro-diverse and neuro-typical people with exceptional musical talent. Together\, Hammerman and Gresham select and work with a team of professional musician mentors\, coaches and supporters\, find the musical talent for the program and work in regular sessions to create performances for festivals and events. \nOnce selected\, all mentor sessions and other activities are primarily paid for through founder funding\, grant awards and generous donations from the public. There are no fees for the selected program artists. The United By Music Band arises from this remarkable\, inclusive program. \nAward-winning Music Director\, Dave Fleschner\, has collaborated closely with Gresham for over ten years\, refining the sound of the band. Known for his work as a band-leader\, educator and producer\, Fleschner says he’s never been more spiritually fulfilled than when working with United By Music America. \nAccording to Hammerman\, “The strength of a mission-based project is that everyone is engaged on some level at some time in the goal of inclusivity and encouraging everyone to rise to their highest level through music.” Prominent musicians who are active mentors for United By Music America include Bobby Rush\, Shemekia Copeland\, Kenny Neal\, Curtis Salgado\, Doug MacLeod\, Janiva Magness\, John Nemeth\, Guy Davis\, Maria Muldaur\, Anne Harris and scores more\, as well as the artists on the newly released United By Music Band EP\, We’ve Got The Music. \nUnited By Music America Program Ambassador Artist\, Sweet Marlana\, is known for wowing packed stadiums with her spine-tingling rendition of the National Anthem at major sporting events. She credits the program with providing her with some critical firsts. Thanks to United By Music America\, VanHoose boarded her first plane\, toured destinations far and wide\, and worked and recorded with a top-flight band featuring well-known musicians. Now she has a full repertoire of songs to sing for her growing audiences\, and says with a smile\, “Because of United By Music America\, I’m no longer a one-hit wonder.” \nOn the majestic\, life-affirming five-song EP\, We’ve Got The Music\, the United By Music Band is joined by professional musicians and program mentors including GRAMMY-winner Christone “Kingfish” Ingram\, blues-rocker Tommy Castro\, Southern Avenue drummer and vocalist Tikyra “T.K.” Jackson\, New Orleans’ vocal and songwriting legend John Boutté and funky rhythm master Curley Taylor\, leader of Zydeco Trouble.  Each track features a song by the mentor musician who collaborates with the United By Music Band on a sparkling new arrangement. The dynamic\, top-shelf musicianship of all involved elevates the positive messages of inclusion\, cooperation and understanding\, with the artists all delivering one memorable performance after another. \nThe songs on We’ve Got The Music are in the UBMA Band’s current repertoire. UBMA artists are excited to have had the chance to record and collaborate with their mentors. The music throughout is joyous\, life-affirming and eminently danceable. (As a bonus\, there is a sixth track\, a longer version of the new UBMA Band arrangement of Kingfish’s Listen\, to close the program.) \nThe release of We’ve Got The Music tells the uplifting story of UBMA’s work challenging assumptions both on and off stage. Through workshops\, rehearsals\, and performances\, UBMA discovers new talents and creates an environment of inclusivity. Originally formed upon the invitation of Joris vanWijngaarden\, a Dutch health care industry executive who started the concept in the Netherlands\, UBMA continues to serve more people by transforming lives with hope and promise. \nGresham\, the program’s producing artistic director and vocal arranger\, and producer of We’ve Got The Music\, says excitedly\, “Not only do I get to guide the artists’ growth as musicians\, I get to see them grow as people. They get to explore friendships\, communicate\, and experience connections. Through the program\, the artists become more comfortable and confident in their ability to perform. This album is a direct result of the success of the program\,

SUMMARY:The Bundy Band at HōKū
DESCRIPTION:  \nTICKETS! \nDoors at 6:00 P.M. \n1 Ticket – Two sets\, starting at 6:30 and 8:00 \n$15 if you buy before May 8. \n$20 at the door. \nUnderage seating available\, please indicated when purchasing tickets. \nThe Bundy Band plays music inspired by New Orleans and the Pacific Northwest. It features many musicians who have been playing together in various formations for nearly 3 decades. \nHoku has delicious food and a full bar. \n \nTICKETS! \nLink to The Whole Series! \n

SUMMARY:The Dave Fleschner Trio Feat Ben Rice
DESCRIPTION:TICKETS! \nDoors at 6:00 P.M. \n1 Ticket – Two sets\, starting at 6:30 and 8:00 \n$15 if you buy before April 24. \n$20 at the door. \nUnderage seating available\, please indicated when purchasing tickets. \nHoku has delicious food and a full bar. \nDave Fleschner on keys\, Dan Gildea on Guitar and Charlie Doggett on drums – have been making music together for decades. This trio begins the evening with  a range of original tunes from Dave’s catalogue\, as well as a variety of blues\, funk soul and jazz classics. \nThey will be joined by their special guest: Ben Rice. \nBen Rice might be described as quiet and unassuming – until he picks up a guitar. That stealthy quality has earned him the moniker “blues ninja\,” evidenced in his vocal chops and songcraft as well as his guitar playing. While Ben started in traditional blues\, over the years he’s built upon that foundation with soul\, R&B\, folk and country to fashion a welcoming front porch where everybody wants to hang out into the wee hours. Since his large-stage debut at the International Blues Challenge in 2014\, Ben has made the leap from Northwest act to national and international touring artist\, featuring at festivals and stages far and wide. \nBen’s early influences were vinyl records – his dad’s Steely Dan\, Bob Marley\, and Marshall Tucker and his mom’s Al Green\, Barry White\, and George Benson. Once his dad bought him a guitar at age seven\, Ben was hooked. Soon all his allowance money was going toward exploratory thrift store finds: blues compilations featuring Mississippi John Hurt\, Bukka White\, Mississippi Fred McDowell\, and cassette tapes of more contemporary artists like Stevie Ray Vaughan and Robert Cray\, all played until they wore out. \nThat broad range of influences combined to yield a guitar style that’s been described as “fearless\,” “inventive\,” and “powerful.” Whether he’s sliding up and down on a steel resonator or reeling off stinging leads on his custom-crafted electric\, Ben’s intensity and inventiveness never fail to turn heads. Audiences also respond to his heartfelt songwriting that carries a classic\, strongly relatable vibe. “My goal is to reach people in a way that they need to be reached\,“ Ben says\, “to say things they may not get to say or hear things they may not normally get to hear.” \nAlthough Ben’s first passion was guitar\, he diligently hones his singing to best support his original tunes. In performance he strives to be mindful of the meaning behind his lyrics\, treating every song like a story and evoking the mood of what the story’s main character is going through. “I try to write songs that hold weight and meaning\, but my songs mean whatever they need to for whoever hears them\,” Ben says. “I want people to enjoy my music on their own terms.” \nTICKETS! \nLink to the whole series!

Reggie embraced education and followed in his parents footsteps to become an arts education advocate\, teacher\, and world-renowned saxophonist. \nReggie was inspired to study saxophone at age 10\, after seeing Ray Charles play alto sax at Lincoln Beach Amusement Park\, where Fats Domino also performed during Reggie’s childhood. Years later\, Reggie would share the stage with both musical giants\, and spend 22 years as a member of Fats Domino’s band\, before moving to Portland\, Oregon in 2004. \nHighlights of Reggie’s time in Portland include: \n\nServing as one of the teachers who prepared The American Music Program high school students for their 2015 1st place win at Lincoln Center’s prestigious Essentially Ellington competition that featured 88 high school jazz bands from across the US.\nPerforming for\, and helping to coordinate three Hurricane Katrina relief benefits:\n\nPortland\, Oregon – Blues for Katrina\, organized by the Oregon Food Bank raised $125\,000.\nSeattle\, Washington – a successful tri-state effort\, coordinated with the Tipitina’s Foundation\, that culminated in the first Instruments A-Comin’ fundraiser held outside of New Orleans to raise money and collect musical instruments for Louisiana school children impacted by Hurricane Katrina.\nCorvallis\, Oregon – Rockin’ The Cradle of Jazz\, held at The University of Oregon in conjunction with The United Way.\n\n\nServing on Portland’s Regional Arts & Culture Council Music Panel for Project Grants. RACC Grants Program Officer Lorin Schmit Dunlop recalls\, “[Reggie] was really pleased to be asked to serve the Arts Council and the arts community this way… and he was a delight! So knowledgeable and a real gentleman…a real asset on the panel.”\nParticipating by invitation as a founding member of the award-winning Northwest Ray Charles Tribute Band and performing with the Oregon Symphony.\nWinning four consecutive Muddy Awards earning him a place in the Cascade Blues Association Hall of Fame.\nPlaying the title character in Sherman\, Grammy award winning composer Thara Memory’s historical opera about Portland Jumptown-era saxophonist\, Sherman Thomas.\nMaintaining weekly\, long-standing gigs at some of Portland’s most beloved eateries: Tapalaya (8 years)\, Eats – An Oyster Bar (8 years)\, and Cannon’s during the summer months (11 years).\n\nSelect highlights of Reggie’s time in New Orleans include: \n\nStudied Music Education at Xavier University in New Orleans and Southern University in Baton Rouge\, La.\n10 years (1973-1983) as a paid employee of The New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival working as the Jazz Tent stage manager\, emcee and booking agent.\nWhen Danny Barker passed away\, Reggie was chosen by Greg Stanford and Shannon Powell to be one of the core band members to play his jazz funeral. A tremendous honor.\nPerformed with\, and offered the baritone sax chair in Dr. John’s band.\nPerformed with Rock & Roll Hall of Fame inductee Dave Bartholomew.\nCo-leader of The Charmaine Neville Band.\nPerformed regularly with Grammy award winning soul singer Irma Thomas.\nAppears on three Peter Gabriel albums.\nRecorded with Buffy St. Marie\, The Neville Brothers\, Indigo Girls\, Joan Osborne\, Bruce Hornsby\, and Mary Flower to name a few.\nPerformed with Bo Diddly\, Chuck Berry\, Professor Longhair\, Maria Muldaur\, Jerry Lee Lewis\, Spider John Koerner\, Rolling Stones guitarist Ronnie Wood\, Fats Domino and many more.\nOriginal member of The Survivors\, formed in 1982 with composer Ramsey McLean on acoustic bass\, fellow saxophonist Charles Neville\, keyboardist Sam Henry\, drummer Zigaboo Modeliste\, and vocalist Charmaine Neville. Other players with The Survivors included guitar virtuoso Steve Masakowski\, drummer Ricky Sebastian\, Bobby McFerrin\, and a teen-aged Harry Connick Jr. on one of his very first road gigs.\n\nReggie’s devotion to his craft\, and to sharing his deep knowledge of Louisiana’s history\, musicians\, and musical genres\, stems from a time-honored New Orleans tradition of arts education. Nurtured by his teachers—musical giants like Edward “Kidd” Jordan\, Johnny Fernandez\, Danny Barker\, and Alvin Batiste—the latter of whom learned at the knee of legendary musician Sidney Bechet\, referred to by Duke Ellington as “the very epitome of jazz\,” Reggie has now picked up the mantle to pass that knowledge on to future generations of musicians. \nWhen funk first developed\, exploding onto the scene\, Reggie was there—not as an observer\, but as a 13 year-old musician playing his first professional gigs with legendary keyboardist David Batiste Sr. and The Gladiators\, widely accepted as one of the preeminent and pioneering bands of funk. \nReggie knows the music. It is in his blood. He can trace the many\, varied styles and influences of southeast Louisiana music all the way back to pre-colonial Africa. It is this knowledge\, coupled with the strong arts education tradition of his hometown that gave rise to Reggie’s newest project\, Anonymous Legends: A History of New Orleans Music—the culmination of Reggie’s life’s work. \n \nTickets to the whole Series: \nhttps://www.tickettomato.com/event_group/547/dave-fleschner

SUMMARY:Dave Fleschner presents Sabroso at HōKū Events!
DESCRIPTION:TICKETS! \nhttps://www.sabrosopdx.com/ \n\n\n\nLatin to Funk and everything between \n\n\n\n\n\n\nBrothers Pablo and Ricardo Ojeda have been writing and playing music together for as long as they can remember. Their musical writing style has taken many forms during the evolution of their sound. From the national touring dance floor packing beats of Rubberneck\, to the hypnotic passionate rhythms of Toque Libre. The Ojeda brothers have continually produced eclectic musical incarnations that meld rhythm and melody together in their own unique way.\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTheir latest musical offering is called “Sabroso”\, meaning flavorful in Spanish. Sabroso starts where Toque Libre left off…the next chapter. Dance floors will move and groove to the sophisticated Latin rhythms and steady funky soul pulse of Sabroso. \nSabroso features some of Portland’s most well known and talented musicians. The band’s rhythmic foundation is brought to you by Pablo Ojeda on bass/vocals (Rubberneck\, Toque Libre\, Geoff Byrd)\, Ward “The Warden” Griffiths (Fred Strickley\, King Beta\, The Quadraphones\, The Gravy) on drums/percussion\, and Carl “Hands of fire” Smith (Crazy eights\, Rubberneck\, Toque Libre) on percussion. \nThe horn section showcases the incredible talent of Levis on trumpet.
